When Leo was 1.5 years old — he didn’t have an extensive vocab (duh).
His first words were
Mum
Book
Ball
Thank you
And he could say “where’s the keys?” — how I didn’t know I had ADHD when that was the first sentence he learned I’ll never know.
But by 2 he had enough up his sleeve to point over my shoulder at nothing and say “they’re coming”.
Yikes, am I right ?
Since then there have been a bunch of incidences but one stands out the most, and another just happened.
Picture this: we are in our cute black jeep in the Noosa hinterlands, on our way to our fave spot in Eumundi (super cute playground near where the markets are), and Leo randomly says “It hurt when the bird flew into me”
???
Oddly specific, and more importantly had never happened.
We rock up, surprise our bestie is there! YAY. Sweet relief of not parenting alone.
We both pile our boys onto the swings.
And guess. The fuck. What happens.
*I shit you not* A bloody pigeon flies into Leo while he’s swinging.
???????!!!
Fast forward to a week ago. My partner has just started FIFO sales in Australia while Leo and I remain in Bali (2 weeks on, 2 off).
Leo (and I) have never really been apart from Riley, and so naturally everyone was a little sad in the days leading up.
Me; because I was gonna miss them.
Leo; because he was adamant Riley was going to get sick.
He said it over and over.
“I don’t want Zaddy to go to Australia because I’m scared they’re going to get sick”
Odd fear I thought.
Guess. The fuck. Who
Is fevering and has the full body aches all the way in Australia right now?
ZADDY. (Riley)
These fun little examples are nearly enough for me to let Leo choose a lotto ticket and we hope for the best.
But mostly; it feels like a good entrance to the change in my publication.
I went from “full of yourself” to “the Arcane”.
For those of you who aren’t familiar (me until it was brainstormed in our substack group chat)
I wanted to shift this space to be more about the questions we ask, rather than pretending I have all the answers.
And oh my god did that make my nipples hard.
I can be just as curious as you. I don’t need to be over here sure of everything. I can be honest - I’m in the trenches too. The only difference is I have ADHD and society is my special interest.
I wanted to focus on the things we don’t know, the things we wonder, the things we ponder, and sometimes the things that keep us up at night.
I want you to come here to ask better questions, to look mystery right in the eye and lick your lips — and not necessarily in a new age spiritual way, more like a horny Nancy Drew.
It feels freeing, to follow my curiosity and focus on developing my writing (pls tell me what you like !). I like it here, in The Arcane. It also feels like it low key could be a magazine or an actual underground bar with poetry, song and comedy nights (low key a side quest of mine).
So welcome, let’s ask some better questions together, starting with:
Is my son a psychic !?
Is yours!?!!!!
Share your stories with me in the comments!!
